A commission for a hand-painted denim jacket inspired by ‘The great wave off Kanagawa’ by Hokusai, his most famous work and one of the most recognizable works of Japanese art in the world. Using the rising sun flag as a backdrop originally used by feudal warlords in Japan, more notably and relatable for me was the use of the flag on Christian Hosoi’s Sims skateboard deck from the 1980s which is actually where the true inspiration of this piece lies.
